What is the difference between modality matching and placement matching?

Modality matching is the notion that based on an assessment a specific treatment can be identified that will best serve the individual. Research has shown limited efficacy and few options for valid modality matching. Placement matching, which is the matching of intensity of services to patient needs and risks has been repeatedly found to improve care outcome, particularly with ASAM CONTINUUM®. ASAM CONTINUUM guides the clinician in conducting a comprehensive interview that individualizes patient needs to provide a recommendation for the care setting with the best-matched intensity of treatment services.
